Research shows that Apple's iOS based iPod, iPad and iPhone technology can increase learning through high-interest student engagement. iPods and iPads offer learning apps that can put a laser-like focus on students' academic needs, yet this powerful instructional technology is only as good as the apps that drive it.  As I found it difficult to find classroom apps that met my instructional needs, the focus of this site is to help guide your instructional app choices for you and your students.  I am a master and mentor, multiple-subject teacher focused on instructional technology of over 20 years, with a personal interest in technology that supports education.  I hope this website is helpful to you as you try to filter iOS apps to discover what is beneficial to your students.

A classroom technology suggestion to you is that you only install apps that are directly focused on the learning you want to see in your classroom.  The "play-focused" apps can get students off task and make them less enthusiastic about the learning apps.  If students don't have access to the apps that are not focused directly on academic concepts, their enthusiasm increases toward the learning experiences that the academic focused apps offer.

Here is a list of my top 10 apps for the iOS for K-6 learning. These can be usable for remediation for 7-12 classrooms.

The Top 10 Apps for K-6 Education:

1. Splashtop Whiteboard

1. Splashtop Whiteboard Splashtop Inc. ($9.99): T
his new iPad only Splashtop Whiteboard application is an amazing instructional technology toolbox for your classroom!  It was released in early June 2011, so even though I have not had the opportunity to use it in front of a class yet, I have used it to control both Mac and PC computers and do instructional technology applications like PowerPoint and Promethean white board software.  This app, used to control other classroom media is a classroom instructional technology revolution in application form.  Initially, you need to download a small program from their website and install it on the computer you are using. It is amazingly well designed! It is wonderfully intuitive, smooth and glitch free. You can control virtually all programs and videos remotely, and what I really liked about it was it allows you to write on top of everything you can put on display. It will allow you to remotely operate and write on top of Word, Google Earth, PowerPoint, Key Note, and even Promethean and Smart Board applications. Did I mention you can write on top of your presentation?  I've always wanted to do this in the classroom.  Splashtop Whiteboard can help you highlight, draw and type in many different fonts and modes. I can't wait to use this in class this fall, as I plan to use it as a foundation for Promethean and virtually all graphic-based instructional media. It is the application that I've been looking for that integrates instructional technology with remote operation and graphical input. I hope it excites your instructional instincts as much as it does mine.
